A heritage tree is a tree, or grove of trees, that holds deep significance for a community, organization, or group of people. What constitutes “deep significance” can vary, but the connection should be clearly demonstrated and documented whenever possible.
For example, a tree or grove planted in honor or memory of an individual, family, or organization, military unit, or other group that is meaningful to a community may qualify for consideration. Unlike a historic tree, a heritage tree does not necessarily need to be associated with a specific historical event.
Heritage tree nominators should use the Historic Tree Nomination Form, since many of the criteria are the same or similar. Please indicate on the form that the tree is being nominated as a heritage tree. The form is available under the Trees drop-down menu above (fourth item in the list) or through the Historic Tree Nomination Form link.
